Vice President Kamala Harris faced criticism on social media over the weekend for her offensive Twitter post leading into Memorial Day weekend.
Harris responded with a more traditional post to honor America’s fallen soldiers, but the follow up was too late for many.
The controversy began when Harris tweeted, “Enjoy the long weekend.”

Why Do We Have a Long Weekend?
Many quickly responded with concerns over the vice president’s lack of respect for the lives traditionally honored on Memorial Day.
Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert responded, “Care to mention WHY we’re having a long weekend, Kamala?”

Another Twitter user responded with a picture of her father in a military uniform with the words, “This is my father that I never got to met since he chose to fight for this country that you live in. Hope you enjoy your ‘long weekend’ too. I know I will enjoy the Memorial Weekend.”

Harris Responds, but Did Not Apologize
Harris did not offer an apology to those offended. Instead, the vice president responded with two additional tweets to honor those who have served the nation.
Throughout our history our service men and women have risked everything to defend our freedoms and our country. As we prepare to honor them on Memorial Day, we remember their service and their sacrifice.

We honor those members of our military who sacrificed their lives in order to defend our freedoms. We owe these heroes—and their loved ones—everything. Not just on Memorial Day. Every day. pic.twitter.com/bAbl6cxxw1

Despite the respectful tone of the later posts, many saw the lack of apology and order of events as too late to address the issue.
