As Fox News reported in March, President Joe Biden described Vice President Kamala Harris as “the most qualified person” to address America’s ongoing immigration crisis. The White House later added that her role would be centered on investigating the “root causes” of the crisis.
However, a group of Republican lawmakers recently suggested that Biden’s characterization of Harris’ leadership abilities turned out to be wildly inaccurate, expressing to the president in a recent letter that they’d like to Harris replaced with someone capable of actually making progress on the issue, according to MSN News.
One of the Republicans calling for Harris to be replaced included Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). The congresswoman tweeted on Monday that she was “proud” to have joined 55 other GOP House members in calling for Harris’ ouster.
Taylor Greene reiterated that message in an Instagram post, writing, “Kamala and Joe have purposefully failed our country at the border!”
Harris isn’t taking the job seriously
The letter, which was an effort spearheaded by Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI), noted multiple arguments as to why they believe Harris is failing in her assigned duties. At the crux of their concerns is the fact that Harris has yet to commit to taking a trip to the southern U.S. border to get a firsthand look at just how bad the situation is.
“Despite being in the midst of a border crisis this country has not seen in two decades, Vice President Harris has not yet shown adequate interest in observing this crisis first-hand,” the Republicans wrote.
“In the 85 days since the Vice President has been tasked with solving this crisis, she has yet to visit the border and meet with Border Patrol agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and local law enforcement officials.”
It’s not just the “Northern Triangle”
The House GOP lawmakers also took issue with Harris’ seemingly exclusive focus on the “Northern Triangle” Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, despite a significant number of migrants arriving from a variety of additional countries.
The Republicans stressed the point, writing, “we see many migrants attempting to illegally cross our southern border from countries all over the world, including Russia, Brazil, Cuba, and Haiti.”
Another point of contention is Harris’ refusal to consider “the role of policy decisions made in the first four months of your administration play in enticing migrants to illegally cross our southern border,” an argument made by many of Biden’s critics, as he spent his first month in the White House virtually erasing the progress made on the issue by former President Donald Trump.
The vice president also garnered widespread negative attention in March when she burst into laughter after being questioned by a reporter if she had plans to visit the southern U.S. border, according to Fox News.
Her unsettling response at the time brought a stern rebuke from Texas Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who told Fox News that the situation “is no laughing matter.”
