Trump pumps Stefanik as an ‘upgrade’ to replace Cheney in top GOP leadership spot

As Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) nears the end of holding the number three GOP House leadership position, former President Donald Trump jumped into the fray on Monday morning with a new statement.

According to the Washington Examiner, the former president, who has been at odds with Cheney since earlier this year, pulled the trigger on endorsing Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) as an “upgrade” to replace “warmonger” Cheney in the top leadership position.

Trump opines

The former president, who has been highly critical of Cheney ever since she broke with the party and voted in favor of impeaching him after the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, made clear in a Monday morning statement that he believes Stefanik is more than deserving of Cheney’s leadership role in the lower chamber.

“The House GOP has a massive opportunity to upgrade this week from warmonger Liz Cheney to gifted communicator Elise Stefanik,” the former president wrote.

Trump also pointed out that Stefanik, given her support for U.S. military veterans, the Second Amendment, and other important issues supported by Trump’s large base of supporters makes for a perfect match.

“Elise has intelligence, an endorsement from American Patriot Brandon Judd and the National Border Patrol Council, she has an A+ from the NRA, and she loves our Veterans. We need someone in Leadership who has experience flipping districts from Blue to Red as we approach the important 2022 midterms, and that’s Elise! She knows how to win, which is what we need!”

Stefanik was a member of Trump’s impeachment defense legal team for his first impeachment trial in 2019, after which he emerged with an acquittal.

Cheney’s in trouble

In recent weeks, several signals have pointed to the inevitability that Cheney will soon face another vote in an attempt to oust her from the number three leadership spot after surviving a similar attempt in February of this year.

According to Reuters, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and House Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) both expressed their support for installing Stefanik into what could soon be a vacated leadership spot if Republicans boot Cheney out.

“We need to be united and that starts with leadership,” McCarthy said on Fox News over the weekend. “We want to be united moving forward, and I think that’s what will take place.”

Cheney’s potential removal could happen this week, as the House is set to reconvene on Tuesday, with many suggesting that a vote to remove Cheney from GOP leadership could take place as soon as Wednesday morning.

Only time will tell how it all plays out, but it looks like a safe bet to presume that it won’t be long before there’s a fresh, pro-Trump face within the ranks of House Republican leadership.
