Texas border agents have seen surge in sex offender arrests in recent months, CBP says

President Joe Biden’s lax stance on border security is starting to have some very real consequences.

According to the Washington Examiner, arrests of convicted sex offenders by border officials near Del Rio, Texas have skyrocketed since the beginning of the fiscal year in October. Nearly 100 previously convicted sex offenders have been apprehended in the region over the last seven months, the Examiner said, an increase of more than 3,100% over the same time period the year prior, when Donald Trump was still president.

Arrests in Del Rio

The news comes by way of a Wednesday press release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The agency announced in its statement that 10 convicted sex offenders had been taken into custody in the Del Rio Sector in the span of one week, from May 17 to 24.

“The majority of these criminals were apprehended in our sector’s most remote areas, attempting to avoid detection by crossing far from populated areas,” Sector Chief Patrol Agent Austin Skero said of the development.

“Our agents’ sign cutting and tracking skills were instrumental in capturing these criminals, preventing them from infiltrating our communities,” Skero added.

A troubling trend

Among those arrested, according to the CBP, were two “Mexican nationals with prior convictions.” The agency said in its statement that “[r]ecord checks revealed one individual had a felony conviction for lewd and lascivious molestation.”

“The second had a felony conviction for lewd and lascivious acts with a child,” the agency said.

Others who were apprehended by border officials had “felony convictions including forcible sexual abuse, sexual assault of a child under 14, sexual assault of a child, sexual assault, sexual conduct with a person under 13 and a registered sexual offender,” the CBP said.

“Agents also arrested two Honduran nationals with felony convictions for statutory rape, and second-degree sexual assault of a child,” the release added.

The ones who got away

It’s scary to think that criminals like these were trekking among the tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors who have crossed the border into the U.S. in recent months — but perhaps even more terrifying is the number of offenders who weren’t caught.

In a report earlier this month, The Center Square cited CBP figures that estimated roughly 42,620 foreign nationals had evaded capture and illegally made entry into the U.S. in the month of April alone — a substantial increase over the two months prior.

That doesn’t include the over 178,000 migrants who border agents actually made contact with in April, as Fox News noted, and the numbers just keep climbing. When is President Biden finally going to say enough is enough?
