Shooting at Colorado birthday party leaves 7 dead, including suspect: Report

Tragedy struck in Colorado Springs over the weekend when a shooter opened fire at a birthday party, leaving multiple people dead.

According to The Hill, local police said the shooting started early Sunday morning, when the boyfriend of one of the victims “walked into the residence” where the party was being held and started shooting.

The suspect later shot and killed himself.

Upon arriving at the scene, police reportedly found six deceased individuals, all adults, and a wounded man who died after being taken to a local hostpial.

Although children were present at the event, none were injured.

Public officials were quick to weigh in on the bloodshed, with Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) writing in a tweet that his “thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of today’s tragic act of violence in Colorado Springs.”

In a statement, Polis called the shooting “devastating” and said it came at a time when “many of us are spending the day celebrating the women in our lives who made us the people we are today.”

“Words fall short to describe the tragedy”

In a statement of his own, Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski declared: “Words fall short to describe the tragedy that took place this morning.”

“As the chief of police, as a husband, as a father, as a grandfather, as a member of this community, my heart breaks for the families who have lost someone they love and for the children who have lost their parents,” Niski said, according to The Hill.

He went on to say the incident represented “something you hope never happens in your own community, in the place that you call home.”

It was the second mass shooting in Colorado to make nationwide headlines this year. In March, a 21-year-old man opened fire at a Boulder grocery store, leaving 10 dead, The New York Times reported. A local police officer and at least three of the store’s employees were among the reported victims.

ABC News reported Friday that the officer who shot and injured the suspect in that shooting will not face charges.
