Rep. Cheney’s likely replacement has been announced

Former President Donald Trump just endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) to replace Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) as the GOP Conference chair, Breitbart reports

“We want leaders who believe in the Make America Great Again movement, and prioritize the values of America First,” Trump wrote in his endorsement. “Elise Stefanik is a far superior choice, and she has my COMPLETE and TOTAL Endorsement for GOP Conference Chair.”

In a separate article, Breitbart further reports that Stefanik has received the endorsement of the Border Patrol Council.

“As President Biden’s policies continue to create the worst surge in illegal immigration in our history, it is more important than ever for our leaders to share a unified message in Congress on the importance of border security,” the council wrote in a statement. “Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is the strongest member to share and grow our message of securing our border and protecting our communities.”

Background

On May 12th, the congressional Republicans will hold a vote on whether or not to remove Cheney from her position as GOP Conference Chair.

Cheney has been a vocal critic of Trump blaming him for the Capitol riot that occurred on January 6th. Despite much criticism, she has continued to insist that the Republican Party has to distance itself from Trump going forward.

Many Republicans disagree with Cheney, even one’s who previously defended her. Accordingly, it now appears certain that she will be removed from her Republican leadership position.

Politico reports: “House Republican sources tell us Cheney is ‘checked out’ and already accepting her fate. Unlike the last attempt to oust her in February, which she handily defeated, she’s not making calls or whipping.”

Looking ahead

With Cheney about to be gone, talk has turned to her replacement, and, here, Stefanik has emerged as a leading candidate, particularly now that she has the endorsement of Trump.

Stefanik recently told her Republican colleagues that, if she is elected to the position, she would only look to hold on to it until the 2022 midterm elections. That’s because she is looking to lead the House Education and Labor Committee as either the chairman or ranking member.

Stefanik is expected to continue lobbying for the GOP Conference chair this week ahead of the vote to oust Cheney.

The vote for Cheney’s replacement could occur on that same day.
