U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has faced mounting criticism from her own party in recent weeks for her frequent attacks on former President Donald Trump and other GOP leaders.
According to Fox News Channel host Joe Concha, Cheney is actually helping the mainstream media in its effort to sell the narrative that the Republican Party is engaged in a “hopeless civil war.”
“Embraced by media bear hugs”
Calling Cheney “the media’s ‘it girl,'” Concha claimed that the Wyoming congresswoman’s opposition to her own party’s agenda is one of several developments that play right into the hands of left-leaning reporters.
She is “just like other Republicans embraced by media bear hugs including Mitt Romney, John Bolton, George W. Bush, for being rogue Republicans,” he asserted, claiming that the congresswoman “seems to be relishing in” that role.
Concha’s remarks came on the heels of an op-ed Cheney wrote for The Washington Post this week.
The Wyoming lawmaker was one of a handful of Republicans who blamed Trump for inciting a riot on Capitol Hill in January. After voting in favor of impeaching the former president, she has maintained her position and subsequently insisted that her party should completely separate itself from Trump going forward.
Of course, a wide majority of the party disagrees with her stance, and she is on the verge of being ousted from her leadership position as chair of the House GOP conference.
“Devoted to the American miracle”
Despite, or perhaps because of, the blowback, Cheney turned to the Post to defend herself, which in itself struck Concha as a curious choice, considering much of the Republican Party is wary of the left-leaning newspaper.
Nevertheless, she used the op-ed to once again insist that her party should distance itself from Trump’s influence.
“We Republicans need to stand for genuinely conservative principles, and steer away from the dangerous and anti-democratic Trump cult of personality,” Cheney wrote. “In our hearts, we are devoted to the American miracle. We believe in the rule of law, in limited government, in a strong national defense, and in prosperity and opportunity brought by low taxes and fiscally conservative policies.”
For their part, House Republican leaders are said to be looking to replace Cheney as conference chair, and a vote next week will likely provide the opportunity to do so. Trump has weighed in on the situation in the form of an endorsement for Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who has become a leading contender to replace Cheney.
“We want leaders who believe in the Make America Great Again movement, and prioritize the values of America First,” he wrote. “Elise Stefanik is a far superior choice, and she has my COMPLETE and TOTAL Endorsement for GOP Conference Chair.”
