New poll shows less than half of Americans under 30 support Dem-backed gun reform measures

The number of young Americans who support increased gun control measures has dropped dramatically over the last three years, Breitbart’s John Nolte revealed in a Sunday column.

Citing a new poll from ABC News and The Washington Post, Nolte said less than half of 18 to 29-year-olds now support proposals like “red flag” laws and magazine capacity limits that Democrats have touted as necessary to cut down on gun violence in America.

The poll, released Tuesday, surveyed more than 1,000 U.S. adults, and found that among the under-30 crowd, just 45% of respondents backed legislation to tighten America’s gun laws.

In April 2018, 65% of 18 to 29-year-olds said the same — meaning the figure has “plummeted” over the last three years, Nolte wrote.

The numbers are in

According to Newsweek, the poll also showed that “[m]assive ideological divides have remained between Democrats and Republicans, with three-quarters of Republicans saying they prioritize the protection of their right to own firearms.”

“And on the other end of the spectrum,” Newsweek said, “83 percent of Democrats and self-identified liberals said they want President Joe Biden to prioritize more gun control laws.”

The results come as Biden closes out his first 100 days as president with no less than six executive orders on firearm possession and ownership on the books.

Among the orders was one issued last month “placing new restrictions on pistol modification and nominating an anti-gun advocate to helm the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF),” as Vox reported.

Biden doubles down

In an April speech announcing those moves, Biden characterized gun violence as “an epidemic” in America.

“Let me say it again: Gun violence in this country is an epidemic, and it’s an international embarrassment,” the president claimed, according to a White House transcript.

He also said he’d directed the Justice Department to create model red flag legislation that states could model their own laws after. “The idea that we have so many people dying every single day from gun violence in America is a blemish on our character as nation,” the president charged.

But try as Biden might to pull at the heartstrings, the data makes clear that Americans — especially young Americans — aren’t getting behind his solutions to the problem. They just aren’t buying it.
