Kamala Harris slams El Salvador’s president for court packing

The Biden administration is deriving inspiration for its political program from Third World banana republics, Kamala Harris inadvertently announced Tuesday.

In comments dripping with irony, the vice president said that an “independent judiciary is critical to a healthy democracy” as she accused the president of El Salvador of packing his nation’s court system, The Daily Wire reported.

Her comments come as the Democratic Party makes a big push to fill the Supreme Court of the United States with partisan liberals.

“Independent judiciary is critical”

In her remarks, Harris laid out a laundry list of “root causes” pushing Salvadoran, Guatemalan, and Honduran nationals to flee their native countries for America.

Although she sought to portray El Salvador as suffering from a partisan, corrupt and dysfunctional government, some might be forgiven if they thought she was in fact describing the Biden administration.

“Just this weekend, we learned that the Salvadoran Parliament moved to undermine its nation’s highest court. An independent judiciary is critical to a healthy democracy and a strong economy,” she said.

Harris could just as well have been describing her party’s court-packing plans, which critics say undermine the “independence” of the system in an anti-democratic power grab.

Biden infamously refused to say whether he supported court packing in the final weeks before the November election, but he has since formed a “commission” to “study” the issue as Democrats advance legislation to enlarge the Court to 13 justices.

Harris unfazed by irony

While some may balk at Harris’s hypocrisy, there isn’t necessarily a contradiction, at least not in the Democratic Party’s way of thinking.

For liberals, courts are “independent” when they’re liberal, and “illegitimate” when they’re not. They have long used this framing to justify court packing, or “unpacking,” in Rep.Jerry Nadler’s (D-NY) now infamous contortion.

During her own ill-fated presidential campaign, Harris supported the push as it started gaining momentum among liberals who complained that Trump had somehow “corrupted” the Supreme Court by making it more conservative. “We are on the verge of a crisis of confidence in the Supreme Court,” Harris said in March 2019. “We have to take this challenge head-on, and everything is on the table to do that.”

It’s temping to laugh at the unintentional irony here. But amid a widely remarked “Third Worldization” of the United States — with political persecution of opponents, insecure elections, you name it — the parallels are perhaps not as strange as they seem.
