Kamala Harris doesn’t mention fallen troops in Memorial Day weekend message

Vice President Kamala Harris kicked of Memorial Day weekend with a tone-deaf tweet that resulted in some serious blowback, The Washington Times reported.

“Enjoy the long weekend,” the vice president tweeted Saturday afternoon, along with a photo of herself grinning to accompany the message.

Absent from her message was any mention of Memorial Day or of the fallen troops that it is meant to commemorate — a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert (R).

The congresswoman responded with a tweet of her own the following day, saying, “Care to mention WHY we’re having a long weekend, Kamala?”

“Unprofessional and unfit”

Former United Nations ambassador and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley wasn’t impressed with Harris’ statement either. “Unprofessional and unfit,” she tweeted.

North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R) said that Harris’ “failure to mention the brave men and women who lost their lives serving to protect our nation was shameful.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) criticized the vice president as well, tweeting, “Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember and express our gratitude to the men and women in uniform who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”

McCarthy was joined by former Georgia state representative and Republican gubernatorial candidate Vernon Jones, who declared, “Memorial Day is more than a ‘long weekend. It’s a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Some defended Harris

Harris did have some people come to her defense, including transgender activist and former Human Rights Campaign spokesperson Charlotte Clymer.

“The Vice President’s ‘long weekend’ tweet doesn’t bother me because I’m a reasonable adult who understands ‘enjoy the long weekend’ is something that even service members and veterans often say to each other at the start of Memorial Day weekend,” Clymer said before calling the controversy “ridiculous.”

Clymer then went on to accuse Harris’ detractors of “egregiously” taking her remarks out of context in order to use them “in bad faith.”

In an apparent attempt to do damage control, Harris released a subsequent tweet on Sunday that read, “Throughout our history our service men and women have risked everything to defend our freedoms and our country. As we prepare to honor them on Memorial Day, we remember their service and their sacrifice.”
