‘Don’t get in the way’: Biden issues warning to GOP lawmakers opposed to his spending plans

President Joe Biden came into office with the promise of a multitrillion-dollar domestic spending spree — and now he is issuing a warning to Republican critics.

In remarks this week, the president promised that more spending will be coming, advising GOP lawmakers not to stand in his way.

“Some people have no shame”

According to the Washington Times, Biden’s cautionary comments were directed toward Republicans on Capitol Hill who opposed his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package in Congress but have subsequently embraced parts of it.

“Some people have no shame,” he quipped.

After vowing that he did not want to “embarrass any one of them,” he held up a list revealing “how back in their districts they’re bragging about the rescue plan.”

Nevertheless, Biden said he was “happy they know that it benefitted their constituents,” insisting that he is “OK” with their change of heart on the matter.

Although the president did not read from his list, reporters took photos that revealed some of the names, including Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY).

“America’s on the move”

While Biden maintained a jovial demeanor, he issued a pointed directive at lawmakers on the other side of the aisle, asserting: “If you’re going to try to take credit for what you’ve done, don’t get in the way of what we still need to do.”

Looking forward, he said the nation’s leaders “still have work to do” but predicting that “our future today is as bright and as wide open as it ever has been.”

The remaining work was an apparent reference to a massive infrastructure spending bill he is attempting to push through Congress even as many conservatives complain that it has little to do with traditional infrastructure projects and programs.

“America’s coming back,” Biden reiterated. “America’s on the move.”

As for the perceived usefulness of the infrastructure plan, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is clearly skeptical, stating last month: “This plan is not about rebuilding America’s backbone. Less than 6% of this massive proposal goes to roads and bridges. It would spend more money just on electric cars than on America’s roads, bridges, ports, airports, and waterways combined.”
