‘Absolutely not’: Bishop from Pelosi’s home district says Catholics cannot be pro-abortion

Pro-life Catholics have long found themselves at odds with the church’s teachings on the issue of abortion, as the archbishop for the home district of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) recently revealed.

Salvatore Cordileone spoke out this week in a passionate denouncement of Catholics who use public platforms to advocate for the sinful act of abortion.

“Very serious matter”

He joined Fox & Friends during a segment on Tuesday to elaborate on a letter he wrote defending the refusal of communion for Pelosi and other prominent Democrats who flout Catholic teachings.

“I need to be very clear in the teaching: Catholics do not deny fundamental human rights and remain in good standing in the church,” he said.

Cordileone went on to decry the common explanation employed by some Democrats, including President Joe Biden, who say they can be privately against abortion while publicly advocating for it to remain legal.

Co-host Steve Doocy asked if it were possible for a “devout Catholic” to support abortion, the bishop declared: “Absolutely not.”

Referring to life as “the most fundamental right,” he said discussions about “killing innocent human beings” is a “very serious matter” for those following the church’s tenets.

“Persistent, obdurate, and public rejection”

“Anyone who cooperates in that is involving themselves in a very serious in, and absolutely not,” he added. “That’s not possible.”

Cordileone had already created a sizable stir with his letter suggesting that Catholics who endorse the “moral evil” of abortion should be barred from communion services.

“In the case of public figures who profess to be Catholic and promote abortion, we are not dealing with a sin committed in human weakness or a moral lapse: this is a matter of persistent, obdurate, and public rejection of Catholic teaching,” he advised.

For their part, Pelosi and Biden have both supported an end to the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer money from being used to fund abortions. They have also dismissed criticism of their abortion stances by invoking their putative credentials as “devout” Catholics.

In accordance with the bishop’s pronouncement, critics of the current president say it is time for the church to make its position clear and have also raised the question of whether Biden is fit to receive the elements of communion.
