19-year-old Swiss motorcycle racer killed in wreck during qualifying

A young professional motorcyclist died doing what he loved in the most tragic way. According to The Guardian, MotoGP has announced that 19-year old Swiss Moto3 racer Jason Dupasquier was killed in a horrific accident during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday.

Dupasquier had fallen from his bike and was hit by another racer, identified by the Associated Press as Ayumu Sasaki.

Medics had attended to Dupasquier’s injuries for half an hour on the track before he was flown to a hospital in Florence, where he passed away, according to The Guardian.

“Following a serious incident in the Moto3 qualifying two session at the Gran Premio d’Italia, it is with great sadness that we report the passing of Moto3 rider Jason Dupasquier,” Moto GP said in a statement.

“Dupasquier was involved in a multi-rider incident between turns nine and 10, with the session red flagged thereafter,” the statement added.

It went on: “Despite the best efforts of circuit medical staff and all those subsequently attending to the Swiss rider, the hospital has announced that Dupasquier has sadly succumbed to his injuries.”

The pro cyclist was in his second season in MotoGP’s lightweight class and was in the top 10 in the standings, the AP reported.

“Ride in peace”

According to The Guardian, a moment of silence was held before the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, in which Dupasquier’s team did not participate. World champion Fabio Quartararo, who won the contest, paid a poignant tribute, waving a Swiss flag at the podium and pointing to the sky at the spot where Dupasquier was killed, The Guardian reported.

“It was tough because when you do the one-minute silence, the emotion is coming really quick and it is difficult to stay focused,” Quartararo said. “We got the win and that one was for Jason and his family.”

The pro’s sudden death sent shockwaves through the world of motorsports, with three-time MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo tweeting, “My deepest condolences to Jason Dupasquier’s family, friends and team. Ride in peace Jason.”

According to CBS News, MotoGP sent out its condolences to his family as well, writing, “You will be sorely missed, Jason. Ride in peace.”

FormulaOne driver George Russell meanwhile wrote that “motorsport can be so cruel,” as The Guardian noted. “Thinking of the family and friends of Jason Dupasquier and everyone in the MotoGP paddock. Ride in peace, Jason,” Russell added.
