Hunter Biden became embroiled in another scandal last month following reports that he lied on a background check form prior to purchasing a firearm.
Now, Republicans are demanding an investigation into President Joe Biden’s son in hopes that he will be treated the same way as anyone else who allegedly committed the same infraction.
GOP lawmakers make request
As Politico reported, the younger Hunter declared that he did not abuse drugs upon filling out the background check form despite a discharge from the U.S. Navy reportedly stemming from his substance abuse problem.
Hunter Biden’s struggle with drug addiction has since been widely publicized and acknowledged by the Biden family, including in a recently published memoir.
In a letter to the president’s nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives this week, U.S. Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) asked for a public commitment that, if confirmed, David Chipman would launch a probe into the matter.
A number of other GOP lawmakers signed the letter, which acknowledged such crimes are rarely prosecuted but nonetheless argued that an ATF investigation would help establish public trust that “well-connected” individuals are still held accountable under the law.
The “zeal” Chipman has shown for “expanding and enforcing” gun restrictions should extend to the Hunter Biden ordeal, the letter continued.
“Will not be curbed”
“Allegations of this crime are no less serious when leveled at Hunter Biden,” the Republican legislator wrote.
Good went on to declare that Americans have a right “to know that this same commitment will not be curbed depending on whether the offender is well-connected.”
The narrative surrounding Hunter Biden’s gun purchase also included a reported incident in which his then-girlfriend, Hallie Biden, tossed the handgun in a trash can. The U.S. Secret Service later became involved in the investigation for reasons that were not altogether clear from media reports.
Late last year, Hunter Biden confirmed that he was the subject of a federal investigation into his “tax affairs.”
His father, then the president-elect, pledged that the case would be handled impartially, but many critics expressed skepticism. With Joe Biden and much of the mainstream media attempting to dismiss prior controversies surrounding Hunter Biden, it seems unlikely that the current administration will prioritize the latest request for an investigation.
