Report: Suspect in vicious assault against Asian woman was on parole for killing his mother in 2002

The man who was arrested in New York City for kicking and stomping an elderly Asian woman is no stranger to the criminal justice system.

According to the Washington Examiner, the suspect in the crime, 38-year-old Brandon Elliot, was on parole at the time of his Wednesday arrest after serving 17 years in prison for killing his mother in 2002. He was released for that crime in 2019.

The suspect was reportedly caught by apartment cameras Monday kicking a 65-year-old Asian woman until she fell down, then repeatedly stomping on her. While he was assaulting the woman, the attacker directed racial slurs at her, the Examiner reported.

The woman was taken to the hospital for a fractured pelvis and released the next day, according to NBC News. Elliot was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count each of attempted assault as a hate crime, assault, and attempted assault.

A vicious attack in NYC

According to NBC News, the 65-year-old woman was on her way to church in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan on Monday at around 11:40 a.m. when the attack took place. She is of Filipino descent.

Elliot allegedly told the woman, “F*** you, you don’t belong here, you Asian,” before he attacked her, NBC reported.

Video reportedly showed that at least three people watched the attack without intervening to help the woman, and a staff member of the apartment building closed the door and left her on the ground after the assailant left the area.

The company that manages the building said it had suspended staff members who saw the attack and did nothing.

According to NBC, the company said later on Instagram that it “condemns all forms of violence, racism, xenophobia, and violence against the Asian American community.”

“Everyone belongs here”

WABC in New York reported that witnesses in the area had identified Elliot as a local homeless person from video footage, and he was arrested at a homeless shelter operating out of a hotel nearby.

According to the Washington Examiner, experts have blamed a recent 150% spike in crimes against Asians on Americans’ reaction to the news that the coronavirus originated in Asia, and on people like former President Donald Trump calling the disease the “China virus.”

“This brave woman belongs here. Asian American New Yorkers belong here. Everyone belongs here,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said of the incident, according to NBC. “Attacks against Asian American New Yorkers are attacks against all New Yorkers.”
