A new poll gives Americans a glimpse at what the 2024 presidential race might look like if former President Donald Trump decides not to run again.
What the poll shows is that, without Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence, Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr., and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) are the Republican frontrunners.
The numbers
This particular poll was recently taken by McLaughlin & Associates. The pollsters asked 441 Republican primary voters who they would choose in the 2024 Republican primary if Trump does not participate.
Coming in first place was former Vice President Pence, who received 19 percent of the vote. Pence was followed by Trump Jr., who received 15 percent of the vote, and DeSantis came in third with 14 percent of the vote.
Fourth place went to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who received 10 percent of the vote. But, after that, there is a sharp dropoff with a number of candidates hovering around 1 to 3 percent.
This includes Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, the Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and many more.
Another recent poll by RMG Research/JustTheNews had somewhat similar results. Here, DeSantis actually led the way with 21 percent of the vote and Cruz came in second with 18 percent of the vote. Neither Pence nor Trump Jr., however, made the list.
The clear favorite
There, of course, is a reason why these polls ask for voters’ opinions on the 2024 race without former President Trump. And, that is because Trump continues to dominate the field.
In the McLaughlin & Associates’ poll, for example, when Trump is included among the choices he receives 55 percent of the vote. Pence drops down to 10 percent, and DeSantis, 7 percent.
What we still don’t know, though, is whether Trump is going to run again in 2024.
In a recent interview, Trump said that he is “very seriously, beyond seriously” looking at a 2024 run, but he added, “from a legal standpoint, I don’t want to really talk about it yet.”
DeSantis, in particular, has emerged as a strong Republican presidential candidate in 2024 given his state’s handling of controversial issues, such as the coronavirus and law enforcement. If Trump runs again, though, it appears as though it will be an uphill battle for any other Republican.
