Democratic politicians, chief among them House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), fiercely denounce voter ID laws as a racist tool of Republicans used to suppress the vote of minorities.
While those claims may reverberate through the media echo chamber and play well among the Democratic Party’s far-left base, an overwhelming majority of American voters actually support voter ID requirements, according to a new Fox News poll.
In fact, the new poll showed that 77% of registered voters believe that voters should be required to show a valid form of ID before casting a ballot, compared to 19% who believe that a valid ID should not be required to vote.
Support for voter ID requirements
The poll, jointly conducted by Democratic firm Beacon Research and Republican firm Shaw & Company, was conducted between April 18-21 and involved 1,002 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error either way of 3%.
The pollsters asked, “Do you think people should be required to show a valid form of state or federally issued photo identification to prove U.S. citizenship before being allowed to vote?”
While roughly three-quarters of voters nationwide supported voter ID requirements in this poll, that support was actually down from 10 years ago in 2011, when 85% said “yes” and 14% said “no” with only 1% being undecided.
Other polls
Elected Democrats like Pelosi can’t dismiss these poll results as being an outlier either, as the liberal-aligned FiveThirtyEight recently acknowledged that, while many Americans balked at various laws viewed as restrictive of the right to vote, voter ID laws were not among those that were opposed.
The site noted that an Economist/YouGov poll in mid-March showed that, by a margin of 53-28, Americans supported a requirement of valid ID in order to cast an absentee ballot.
It also pointed to a recent poll from Selzer & Co./Grinnell College which found that 56% of U.S. adults were in favor of voter ID requirements while 36% were opposed.
Long-time support
Nor is this a new position, as FiveThirtyEight referenced a Pew Research Center survey in 2018 which revealed that 76% of Americans favored voter ID laws while 23% opposed such requirements.
The Washington Examiner looked back even further at Pew Research polls and found that support for voter ID has been high for quite some time, with support from 80% of voters in 2006 and 77% of voters in 2012.
Regardless of what Pelosi and media pundits may say, American voters support voter ID laws by substantial margins, and Democrats ought to get on board with the widely accepted, commonsense requirement.
