Navy medic shoots 2 Navy sailors before being taken down at military base

A Navy medic who went berserk near a military base Tuesday morning left two sailors injured before his rampage was stopped.

Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, 38, was killed at Fort Detrick in Maryland minutes after he started shooting, Breitbart reported.

The active shooting was reported around 8:30 a.m. at the Riverside Tech park, a naval medical research center in Frederick, at the 8400 block of Progress Drive. Around 9:15, the suspect was “down,” Frederick Police said. The suspect left two victims at the business park, both sailors from nearby Fort Detrick.

Shooter drove through checkpoint before being shot by police

He then drove to the base, where he blew past a checkpoint and made it half a mile before dying in a confrontation with police.

One of the victims has been released from the hospital and the other remains critically injured.

“Fort Detrick Police have neutralized an active shooter situation involving an armed gunman and medical lifesaving procedures were initiated. The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene,” Fort Detrick said.

Shooter identified

A witness said one of the victims had told him they knew the shooter, a Navy Hospital Corpsman who lived miles from the base with his wife and two kids.

The suspect joined the Navy in 2012 and previously lived in Illinois, Texas, North Carolina and Virginia before moving to Maryland.

A neighbor described him as polite. “My daughter has seen him and said he was nice,” a neighbor told CBS affiliate WJZ. “He always said hi. He was cordial.”

No motive

There is currently no motive for the attack, but Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando said “there is no further cause for alarm in the Frederick community.” While the shooting was in progress, schools in the area were locked down.

“It’s happening too frequently. Every time we turn on the TV we’re seeing something like this happen, and now it’s happening in our backyard,” Lando said. “No one wants to see this type of thing.”

Recent mass shootings in Boulder, Colorado and Atlanta, Georgia spurred calls for gun control, but Maryland has relatively strict gun control laws already, including a red flag law and a ban on so-called “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazines, Breitbart noted.
