The controversial, recent voting reform law passed in Georgia triggered an avalanche of “woke” corporate reactions — to the tune of hundreds of major companies and organizations either strongly condemning the law or protesting it by pulling events out of the state.
According to The Hill, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) broke his silence on what he labeled the “Outrage-Industrial Complex” and warned major companies, especially Georgia-based companies like Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines to stop with the protests, as they’re based on false information that was spread by several high-profile Democrats, including President Joe Biden.
What’s going on?
Critics of the new Georgia voting law falsely claim that it’s a form of “voter suppression,” when, in fact, it actually provides increased opportunities for residents of the state to have ample time to take care of their voting business in future elections.
What really seemed to fuel the fake news surrounding the bill was Biden’s blatantly false assessment that it prevented working-class citizens in the state from voting and was reminiscent of the Jim Crow era. Biden’s claims were literally outright lies — the usually Biden-friendly Washington Post hammered the president last week with a rare, “Four Pinnochio” rating as a result of his lies concerning the new law.
After America’s president spread the falsehoods, companies, and corporations like Major League Baseball (MLB) reacted swiftly, even going as far as pulling their extremely popular and economically beneficial All-Star Game from Georgia in protest of the new law.
Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey joined the knee-jerk outrage reaction, expressing his disappointment in the new law while pushing for the Democrat-led effort to pass federal voting reforms, known as H.R. 1.
“We all have a duty to protect everyone’s right to vote, and we will continue to stand up for what is right in Georgia and across the U.S.,” Quincey said.
McConnell fires back
The Kentucky senator might have been quiet over the past few months, but he certainly wasn’t shy about expressing his anger with the number of corporations that have suddenly jumped into the “woke” political arena.
“It’s jaw-dropping to see powerful American institutions not just permit themselves to be bullied, but join in the bullying themselves,” McConnell said, adding that Georgia’s laws are actually more voter-friendly than laws currently on the books in New York, where multiple corporations reside, yet have not reacted in the same way as they are in Georgia.
“There is no consistent or factual standard being applied here. It’s just a fake narrative gaining speed by its own momentum,” the Senate Minority Leader added.
One can also not dismiss the massive and free public relations boost that corporations like Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, and others are experiencing by exploiting extremely polarizing political issues to generate publicity that otherwise can’t be bought with even the largest of marketing budgets.
Only time will tell if the latest class of “woke” corporations realize that Americans are sick and tired of companies injecting into politics and returning to business as usual, but I’m afraid that tactic is only in its infancy and will continue to be used in the future.
