McCarthy: Voters who expected ‘moderate’ Biden got something else entirely

During last year’s presidential primary race, many Democrats coalesced around then-candidate Joe Biden as a moderate alternative to self-described socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

But according to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) voters who thought they would get moderation in Biden are getting something else entirely.

“If I look at the 100 days, it’s more like a bait-and-switch,” McCarthy told Fox News’ Chris Wallace on Sunday.

McCarthy explained that Biden has done nothing in the way of bipartisan outreach, saying, “I have not met with the president one time, nor had one conversation.”

Radical infrastructure bill

The congressman took particular issue with the contents of Biden’s $2.3 trillion infrastructure bill and how the term “infrastructure” is being defined in the legislation.

“Less than 6% in the infrastructure goes to infrastructure,” he said, adding that he has seen no willingness from Democrats to compromise on what belongs in the bill.

“Republicans would be the first one that would work with him, but I think the very first thing we would need to do [is] define what infrastructure is: roads, bridges, airports, Broadcom? We would get this done,” McCarthy insisted.

“But I think when America found out that just 6% is going to the roads, that they’re not going to be built for more than a decade, that we spend more on subsidizing electric cars than roads, bridges, and airports in this bill, I don’t think that’s going to be popular,” he added.

“Faustian bargain” to become nominee

McCarthy is not the only one to assert that Biden has adopted a far more extreme agenda than what he sold to the American people during his campaign.

The Hoover Institute’s Dr. Victor Davis Hanson made a similar argument in an op-ed piece he wrote for Fox News in February.

“On almost every issue — open borders, blanket amnesties, canceling the Keystone XL pipeline, promoting the Green New Deal, and hard-left appointees — Biden is touting positions that likely do not earn 50 percent public support,” Hanson wrote.

“When Biden made a Faustian bargain with his party’s hard-left wing of Sens. Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to win the election, he took on the commitment to absorb some of their agenda and to appoint their ideologues,” he added.
