Kamala Harris won’t admit Biden administration incentivized migrant surge

Vice President Kamala Harris has yet to visit America’s southern border, despite having been tasked by President Joe Biden as the “border czar.”

In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Harris said she plans to visit the Northern Triangle countries of Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, The Washington Times reported. While she mentioned some of the reasons why people are flooding the border, there was one reason Harris conspicuously avoided — namely, the fact that her administration incentivized people to come.

“Yes, we’re working on a plan to get there, we’re working through COVID issues,” Harris told CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday. “I can’t get there soon enough.”

“Most people don’t want to leave home”

Harris then went on to note the level of dysfunction that exists in the migrants’ home countries, saying, “That is a big part of what is going on.”

“Most people don’t want to leave home,” Harris continued.

“They don’t want to leave their grandparents. They don’t want to leave the place where they grew up. We have to give people some sense of hope that if they stay that help is on the way,” she said.

The vice president then laid out some of the ways that her administration is planning to mitigate some of the problems in Central America, including having the Department of Agriculture offer farming assistance while funneling aid through the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Policies have incentivized migrants

While it is certainly true that living conditions are harsh for many people in the Northern Triangle, Harris didn’t mention the role that she and President Biden have played in incentivizing their arrival.

As Fox News reported in March, one migrant told ABC correspondent Martha Raddatz that he would “definitively not” have made the journey if former President Donald Trump were still in office.

“Did you come here because Joe Biden was elected president?” Raddatz asked at one point, to which the migrant responded, “Basically.”

That the migrant would say this is unsurprising given the rhetoric and policies that Biden and Harris have pursued. Shortly after taking office, Biden announced that he was halting construction of the border wall and would revoke Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy.

Meanwhile, Harris has a history of extreme rhetoric when it comes to immigration, including once comparing ICE agents to members of the Ku Klux Klan.
