‘Not today’: VP Harris responds with a laugh when reporter asks if she will visit border

The southern U.S. border continues to see a massive influx of undocumented migrants, which is clearly overwhelming the nation’s immigration resources.

For her part, however, Vice President Kamala Harris does not seem too alarmed by the situation. In fact, when a reporter recently asked her if she would be visiting the border, Harris responded with a chuckle.

“But I have before”

The exchange occurred at Jacksonville International Airport in Florida this week, as Fox News Channel personality Sean Hannity noted in posting video footage to his website.

A reporter pressed her on the emerging border crisis as she stood on the tarmac, asking if she had “plans to visit the border.”

With a laugh, Harris said that she replied: “Uh, not today. But I have before, and I’m sure I will again.”

It was unclear from the context of the clip why the vice president found either the question or her reply humorous, but it was the latest evidence that the administration of President Joe Biden denies that the current wave of immigrants on the U.S.-Mexico border constitutes a crisis.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) spoke for millions of concerned Americans in a recent letter to the White House, declaring that “the American people are beginning to understand the gravity of the situation.”

“Clearly and emphatically refused”

He went on to express his opposition to the Biden administration’s decision to prevent reporters from visiting migrant detention facilities. The Texas Republican said that it “is not enough for members of the Senat to see what is happening,” asserting that “the American people must see” it as well.

“That is why I requested that members of the media be allowed to join us,” Cruz added. “But your administration clearly and emphatically refused to offer press access.”

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) released photos of a holding center in his state this week, revealing detainees sleeping on the floors of the crowded facility, including a number of individuals who appeared to be children.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas attempted to assuage concerns about the administration’s ban on reporters inside the facilities by blaming the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis.

“Let me be clear,” he said during an interview on Sunday. “We’re in the midst of a pandemic. We’re talking about a crowded border Patrol station where we are focused on operations. At the same time, and let me assure you, we are working on a plan to provide access so that people could see what is going on at the Border Patrol stations.”
