Graham predicts that ‘majority of the Senate would reject’ bill banning ‘assault weapons’

President Joe Biden has made it clear since the early days of the 2020 presidential election that he intends to impose new restrictions on the rights of Americans to own certain so-called assault rifles.

While measures to ban firearms and extended ammunition magazines might squeak through a Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) predicted that such proposals would be defeated in his chamber on the strength of opposition on both sides of the aisle. 

“I don’t want to wait another minute”

In the wake of a recent mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado, that left 10 victims dead, the president issued a new statement regarding the perceived need for new gun control laws.

“I don’t want to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take commonsense steps that will save lives in the future and to urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to act,” Biden said.

He went on to declare that legislators “can ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country once again.”

Of course, GOP critics including Graham do not share his belief that passing any type of major regulation would be a sure thing in the Senate.

In an interview this week, the South Carolina Republican told Washington Examiner reporter Hugo Gurdon that he looks forward to the chance to vote on a proposed ban on assault weapons.

“I chose to own it”

“I own an AR-15,” Graham said. “Now, why do I own it? Because I have the right to own it, and I chose to own it.”

The senator said he had sentimental reasons for owning his personal weapon, but said more broadly that there are other compelling reasons to purchase such a rifle.

“If there’s a breakdown of law and order, there’s a natural disaster, and the gangs are roaming through a neighborhood, what house do they go to the last?” he asked. “The one without a gun, the one with a double-barrel shotgun, or the one with the AR-15?”

As for the outcome of an assault weapons ban bill in the upper chamber, Graham made a “prediction” that “a majority of the Senate would reject that vote.”

Although the Senate is evenly split between the two parties, he said that red-state Democrats “cannot vote” for such a measure. Pro-gun Americans can only hope that his prediction is correct.
