Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s ongoing sexual misconduct scandal continues to grow.
In the latest development, an eighth accuser — and the first current member of the governor’s staff — has come forward to accuse him of harassment.
“Unsettling interactions”
The previous allegations have either come from former staffers or women he had come into contact with through some other connection.
Alyssa McGrath detailed her allegations against Cuomo in remarks to The New York Times, which published her account in an article on Friday.
According to that report, McGrath accuses the governor of “unsettling interactions,” claiming that he “would ogle her body, remark on her looks, and make suggestive comments to her and another executive aide.”
Cuomo allegedly referred to McGrath and another staffer as “mingle mamas” and asked her personal questions about her relationship status. He is also accused of calling her “beautiful” in Italian and “gazed down her shirt” on one occasion before remarking on a necklace she was wearing.
The Times described “an unusual work triangle” Cuomo allegedly created between himself, McGrath, and “the co-worker he allegedly groped.” The third individual has not been publicly identified.
“It may be old-fashioned”
For his part, Cuomo continues to maintain his innocence — and one of his attorneys issued a statement in response to the latest allegation.
According to Rita Glavin, “the governor has greeted men and women with hugs and a kiss on the cheek, forehead, or hand. Yes, he has posed for photographs with his arm around them. Yes, he uses Italian phrases like ‘ciao bella.'”
Nevertheless, the lawyer claimed that his behavior is not “remarkable, although it may be old-fashioned,” reiterating that Cuomo “has made clear that he has never made inappropriate advances or inappropriately touched anyone.”
The governor has issued similar responses over the course of the past few weeks, calling the allegations made by one accuser “gut-wrenching” while expressing confidence that an investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James would exonerate him.
While the sexual misconduct claims have led to bipartisan calls for his resignation, investigators are also conducting a probe into a separate scandal involving his administration’s reporting of the COVID-19 death toll among his state’s nursing home population.
