The White House is yielding to some pressure for the American people to see more of President Joe Biden, with the president set to deliver his first prime-time address on Thursday.
Biden will “commemorate” the anniversary of the coronavirus shutdowns that have caused so much misery over the last 12 months, Breitbart reported.
Biden to come out of hiding
Thursday marks one year since Donald Trump announced travel restrictions to control the burgeoning pandemic in a March 11 speech.
In his own speech, Biden is expected to acknowledge the pain Americans have gone through over the past year and make an appeal for the country to keep following COVID restrictions until “normal” returns at some indefinite point in time.
The country has suffered an incredible economic and psychological toll since lockdowns began last March, as millions lost jobs, countless small businesses went under and schoolchildren were kept at home in isolation from their peers. Basic civil liberties to work and worship freely were suspended.
“He will discuss the many sacrifices the American people have made over the last year and the grave loss communities and families across the country have suffered,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said at her daily press briefing on Monday.
Biden also “will look forward to highlighting the role that Americans will play in beating the virus and moving the country toward getting back to normal.”
Biden: no time for normal
Biden’s address will offer a rare glimpse of a president of whom Americans have heard and seen precious little, and whose interactions with the press and the people have been very closely controlled.
The president has faced mounting pressure from reporters to open up his presidency to public scrutiny after going over a month without a solo press conference. Many suspect that the Biden White House is protecting an evidently senile president out of fear that he will embarrass himself.
A prime-time address is likely to offer fewer chances for mishaps, although it’s possible Biden comes with a gaffe or two.
Meanwhile, Biden has made no secret of his view that the time to return to normal has not yet arrived, ripping governors who have begun relaxing restrictions as exhibiting “Neanderthal thinking.”
However, the infection rate is on the decline, with vaccinations steadily underway, giving many hope that the misery of the last year can soon be left behind.
