In recent remarks to reporters, President Joe Biden declared that there was no emerging immigration crisis on the southern border and that his administration would “handle” the situation.
Since then, reports show that a White House team is heading to the U.S.-Mexico border for a secretive fact-finding mission of sorts.
“The influx of unaccompanied minors”
The news comes as the Biden administration faces mounting criticism from across the political spectrum for its immigration policies.
White House spokesperson Vedeant Patel acknowledged the forthcoming visit to the border in response to the increased pressure from pundits and politicos alike.
According to The Hill, Patel revealed that a group of “senior members” from the Biden administration will be making the trip at the president’s request.
He said that the purpose of the mission will be “to provide a full briefing” to the president on matters including “the government response to the influx of unaccompanied minors and an assessment of additional steps that can be taken to ensure the safety and care of these children.”
Additional details were not immediately available, but Breitbart obtained a White House statement indicating that the administration is intentionally keeping a tight lid on the scope of the trip, which has been closed to the press.
Background on the continuing crisis
According to Patel, a summary of the report compiled by those participating in the trip will eventually be made public.
Former President Barack Obama also faced a massive influx of undocumented migrants along the nation’s southern border, which policies enacted under former President Donald Trump were widely credited with bringing under control.
Since Biden took office, however, he has undone many of his predecessor’s policies, in many ways returning the nation to the position it was in under Obama. As a result, a similar situation appears to be brewing.
Of course, it is not just Republicans who are upset over what they perceive to be lax immigration policies. The steady stream of immigrants pouring across the border has resulted in the need to reopen child detention camps, which has upset many progressive Democrats.
Given his administration’s insistence that there actually is no border crisis, speculation is growing that this secret trip has been designed to produce a report defending his position that everything is under control.
