In 2015, Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby gained a measure of fame on the left when destructive riots rocked the city and she sided with protesters and rioters against the city’s police department.
That stardom among Democrats may not be enough to keep her and her husband out of legal trouble, however. According to Fox News, the couple is reportedly the subject of multiple subpoenas related to an ongoing federal investigation into their personal and political finances.
The prominent prosecutor’s husband, Nick Mosby, currently serves as president of Baltimore’s City Council. Adding a level of intrigue to the development is the fact that the pair also appear to have political ties to Vice President Kamala Harris.
Subpoenas served
Local Fox affiliate WBFF reported that it obtained copies of multiple subpoenas from a grand jury seeking financial documents in a federal probe targeting both Marilyn and Nick Mosby.
One subpoena was served to Sharif Small, the prosecutor’s campaign treasurer, with a request that he provide documents regarding the personal finances of Marilyn and Nick Mosby, the finances of several small businesses the couple launched, and the financial records of the prosecutor’s campaign.
In addition to the individual and business tax records from 2014-2020, the subpoena also sought all supporting documentation and communications used in the preparation of those returns for them personally, their businesses, and the campaign.
Potential crimes under investigation
While it remains somewhat unclear what exactly federal investigators are probing with regard to the Mosbys, WBFF noted that questions have previously been raised about the campaign finances for both of the political power players in Baltimore, in addition to donations the pair may have made, such as to a prominent area church that they don’t even attend.
Marilyn Mosby has also come under fire for allegations related to her office accepting gifts and then auctioning them off, as well as for allegedly unapproved out-of-town travel at the taxpayer’s expense, something that Baltimore’s Office of Inspector General had been investigating.
The outlet also noted that there had previously been a $45,000 lien placed against Nick Mosby’s home by the IRS over allegedly unpaid taxes between 2014-2016, though it remains unclear if that lien has been handled yet.
Defiant statement of innocence
An attorney for the Mosbys, A. Scott Bolden, said in a statement, “On behalf of Nick and Marilyn Mosby, my clients are progressive change agents, making them unfair targets of unnecessary scrutiny by federal investigators,” local NBC affiliate WBAL reported.
The attorney said the pair had “done nothing illegal, inappropriate or unlawful,” and noted, “This is a political witch hunt in its purest form, and both of them will vigorously, and fully defend themselves.”
“In the interim, I’ve advised them to refrain from making any further comments, on these matters,” Bolden added. “As they’ve done with every other baseless charge and investigation lodged against them, they have every intent to fully cooperate with the investigation, to fight for the truth to come out, while continuing to fight for the citizens of a city that they both love, and are blessed to serve.”
