Arizona’s Doug Ducey says Biden made the wrong choice putting Kamala Harris in charge of the border

Arizona’s Republican governor is accusing the Biden administration — namely, Vice President Kamala Harris — of being incompetent when it comes to handling the growing crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border.

According to The Hill, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey blasted President Joe Biden on Wednesday for his decision to put Harris in charge of “stemming” migration at the southern border, saying she’s the “worst possible choice” for the job.

“At no point in her career has [Harris] given any indication that she considers the border a problem or a serious threat,” Ducey said Wednesday, according to The Hill.

“If President Biden’s intent was to show that he’s taking this issue seriously…he’s really done the exact opposite,” the governor added.

“The worst situation we’ve seen”

Ducey also said Wednesday that the problem at the border is the worst he’s seen in years — and that the White House “has never been more out of touch” with the situation.

“I’ve been governor under three presidents, and this is by far the worst situation we’ve seen. Washington has never been more out of touch, and it starts at the top,” the governor said, as The Hill reported.

Ducey’s criticism came after Biden announced Wednesday that he was tasking his VP with handling the crisis.

“I have asked her, the VP, today, because she is the most qualified person to do it, to lead our efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle and the countries that are going to need help in stemming the movement of so many folks, stemming the migration to our southern border,” Biden said, as The Hill reported separately.

An unnamed White House official told The Hill that “Harris’ work will run along two tracks — first to address the swell of migrants at the southern border, and second to build long-term partnerships with the Central American countries the people are fleeing.”

“Not today”

But like Ducey, many Americans aren’t convinced that Harris is really up to the task of taking on what has been described as the biggest surge of migrants in two decades. Just before Biden named Harris the overseer of the crisis, the vice president was caught on camera laughing off a question from a reporter on whether she intended to visit the border. “Not today,” Harris said, chuckling, according to Breitbart. “But I have before and I’m sure I’ll do it again.”

The vice president later tried to take a more serious tone in an interview with CBS This Morning. “Well, OK, look, it’s a huge problem,” Harris said, as Breitbart reported. “I’m not going to pretend it’s not. It’s a huge problem.”

Only time will tell if it’s indeed too big for the former California senator who, notably, didn’t even finish her first term in Congress’ upper chamber before taking a job at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
