Trump says he won’t be taking over for the ‘irreplaceable’ Rush Limbaugh

Even as tens of millions of fans mourned the death this week of conservative talk radio icon Rush Limbaugh following his year-long battle with lung cancer, it didn’t take long for speculation to start swirling as to who might replace him on the air.

Donald Trump’s name has been floated by some for the job, but the former president has made clear that is not interested in the gig, calling Limbaugh “irreplaceable” in a Wednesday interview, as Breitbart reported.

That assessment came during one of several calls made by Trump on Wednesday to publicly mourn the loss of his personal friend and long-time supporter.

“He’d be a hard one to replace”

Pressed by Newsmax host Greg Kelly, Trump said he hadn’t even “thought about” stepping into Limbaugh’s shoes.

“Well, a lot of people are mentioning that, and no, it’s not anything I’ve thought about,” Trump told the network. “He’d be a hard one to replace… I’d say he’s irreplaceable.”

The former president continued: “You wouldn’t want to follow Rush. It’s the old story, you get somebody like that, you don’t want to follow them because some things just can’t be done. He was unique.”

Trump went on to marvel at Limbaugh’s ability to talk for hours without repeating himself or filling time with endless phone calls, a feat that made the radio host “spellbinding” to his “massive audience,” the former president said. Take a look for yourself:

Rush Limbaugh: One of a kind

Talk of Trump potentially replacing Limbaugh is actually nothing new; such an arrangement has been floated several times over the last year since the radio host first announced his terminal diagnosis.

One example of such chatter came from The Week just prior to the November 2020 election. In a brief article, the outlet noted that taking over Limbaugh’s show would be one way for Trump to stay relevant in politics despite a loss at the ballot box.

But no one could say it better than the former president himself: Limbaugh was one of a kind.

“We lost a great one today,” Trump told Newsmax on Wednesday. “Rush was just a unique character and a great friend to all of us.”
