House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has responded to last month’s riot on Capitol Hill with a demand for accountability and a full review of the circumstances leading up to the siege.
The retired Army lieutenant general she slated to lead a “security review” of the incident, however, is drawing widespread criticism based on his prior remarks attacking prominent conservative lawmakers.
“Should be run out of D.C.”
According to reports, Russel Honore has labeled Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) a “piece of s***” and similarly disparaged other Republicans in the chamber.
Among those questioning Pelosi’s decision to select him for the job is Fox News Channel host Tucker Carlson, who highlighted some of the retired general’s most alarming comments. For her part, the House speaker has previously declared that the “enemy is within” Congress in discussing the riot — and Honore apparently agrees.
At one point in Carlson’s on-air monologue, he pointed out Honore’s bizarre theory that “Trumpsters” serving with the Capitol Police allowed the riot to take place in allegiance to the then-president.
In addition to declaring that Hawley “should be run out of D.C. and disbarred,” Honore described the Missouri Republican and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) as “aaa [sic] hats” with “high order white privilege.”
He also advocated for U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) to be placed on the no-fly list, labeling her a “stupid a***.”
“Very, very frightening stuff”
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) reacted to the news by tweeting: “Pelosi hired a bigot to hunt MAGA.”
In his own statement, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) called Honore “an extreme partisan” who “should be the LAST person to head up an investigation of what happened at the Capitol on Jan. 6.”
Carlson spoke to Hawley about the development, leading the legislator to castigate the House speaker over her perceived motivations.
“Nancy Pelosi isn’t interested in getting any facts,” Hawley said. “She’s interested in power. I’m concerned that they continue to treat the Jan. 6 catastrophe, that criminal riot, as an excuse to seize power.”
He went on to express concern that the ongoing Democratic effort could become “an excuse to go rifle through the emails and bank statements and personal messages of law-abiding Americans,” calling the prospect “very, very frightening stuff.”
