A key part of the campaign of then-Democratic nominee Joe Biden revolved around a pledge that he would do a better job of handling the coronavirus pandemic than his predecessor, President Donald Trump.
New polling results, however, suggest that a growing number of Americans aren’t impressed by the president’s performance so far, TheBlaze reported.
Down from January
A survey conducted by Hill-HarrisX between Feb. 12 and 15 found that 64% of registered voters say they approve of how the new administration has responded to COVID-19.
That figure represents a decline of 5 points compared to the findings of an earlier survey conducted between Jan. 21 to 24 in which the same question was asked.
The poll, which was done online among 2,835 registered voters with a margin of error of 1.83 percentage points, also showed a slight drop in Biden’s overall approval rating, declining by one point since last week.
Biden gaffes
One factor that is unlikely to build voter confidence in the administration’s handling of the pandemic is Biden’s continued habit of making disjointed and bizarre claims when speaking off the cuff.
During a CNN town hall event on Tuesday, the president suggested that many Black and Hispanic Americans are unable to get vaccinated because they don’t know how to use the internet, The Federalist reported.
“Not everybody in the community — in the Hispanic and the African American community, particularly in rural areas that are distant and/or inner-city districts — know how to use — know how to get online to determine how to get in line for that COVID vaccination at the Walgreens or at the particular store,” Biden said.
During the same event, the president also falsely claimed that there was no vaccine available when he took office, despite the fact that he was vaccinated before he was even in the White House.
Trump: “Very dumb statement”
Former President Donald Trump told Newsmax TV’s Greg Kelly that his successor was either lying or suffering from cognitive decline.
“I saw that he said there was no vaccine when he came into office, and yet he got a shot before he came into office,” Trump pointed out Wednesday evening.
“So he’s either not telling a truth, or he’s mentally gone, one or the other,” Trump said. “Could he be joking? Because, frankly, that was a very dumb statement.”
