House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been adamant in her demand for stringent new security measures in the Capitol building following last month’s deadly riot.
Her decision to task retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore with conducting a thorough review, however, has come under fire given his previous politically charged rhetoric.
“High order white privilege”
As Fox News Channel host Tucker Carlson noted, Honore’s criticism of Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) reveals him as anything but a neutral observer on the issue.
In one tweet, the 74-year-old retired Army general called Hawley a “little peace [sic] of s***” who “should be run out of DC and Disbarred ASAP.”
Denouncing both Hawley and Cruz in another post, he accused them of having “high order white privilege” and dubbed them both “aaa hats.”
For his part, Hawley responded to the comments during an appearance on Carlson’s show, stating: “I mean some of the statements that the General has made are just downright crazy.”
He went on to express disagreement with Pelosi not only for appointing Honore to the oversight role but also for instructing National Guard troops to remain in the nation’s capital long after any signs of violence or civil unrest.
“An extreme partisan”
“It’s just unbelievable, and it shows that Nancy Pelosi isn’t interested in getting any facts,” Hawley determined. “She is interested in power and in amassing power and an excuse to keep holding power, including those thousands of troops who are still at the Capitol who are still there treating it like an armed camp.”
Carlson and Hawley are not alone in questioning Honore’s ability to impartially review the circumstances surrounding the Jan. 6 riot.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), for example, tweeted that he is “an extreme partisan and should be the LAST person to head up an investigation of what happened at the Capitol on Jan. 6.”
As Fox News reported, Honore also asserted in a statement to MSNBC last year that former Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf should “be run out of Washington” and had “no business” leading the agency.
Nevertheless, Pelosi has stood by her pick, defending him as “a respected leader with experience dealing with crises.”
