Rallygoers interviewed by the Washington Examiner before the unprecedented and tragic events that unfolded on Capitol Hill on Wednesday said that if Vice President Mike Pence wouldn’t contest the certification of the Electoral College votes, his political career would swiftly come to a close.
Vice President Pence had released a statement before Congress convened Wednesday denying that he had any authority to stop the certification process, as the president and many of his allies had argued.
“Our Founders were deeply skeptical of concentrations of power and created a Republic based on separation of powers and checks and balances under the Constitution of the United States,” Pence said, according to Business Insider.
“Vesting the Vice President with unilateral authority to decide presidential contests would be entirely antithetical to that design,” he added.
“He’s done”
As the Washington Examiner reported, the vice president’s remarks didn’t sit well with several supporters of President Donald Trump who visited Washington from across the country Wednesday.
“If he does not vote to reject these fraudulent votes in [the] six contested states, his political career is over because 73-plus million Americans won’t forget,” one woman said, according to the Examiner. “He’s done.”
An Alabama man who also attended the rally reportedly said he wouldn’t be “surprised” if Pence “betrayed” Trump by certifying Biden’s win.
“Throughout these last four years, there’s one person who’s continued to be true to who they are,” he told the Examiner.
“That’s the president of the United States,” the rallygoer insisted, according to the Examiner. “So would I be surprised if Mike Pence betrayed the president? Absolutely not.”
A day of chaos
Congress did ultimately cement Biden’s win early Thursday after hours of debate over the electoral results in states including Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. The proceedings were interrupted in the early afternoon when a mob of rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol and wreaked havoc, destroying and stealing federal property and reportedly assaulting law enforcement officers.
The chaos left four people dead, including one woman who was shot by U.S. Capitol Police, and put the Capitol on lockdown for hours, according to reports.
Congress reconvened around 8 p.m. ET after the Capitol grounds were cleared, and Pence formally declared Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris the president-elect and vice president-elect just before 4 a.m., according to CBS News.
