Another tragic death announcement has shaken Washington D.C. this week after Rep-elect Luke Letlow’s (R-LA) shocking death from coronavirus at 41 earlier this week.
Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) announced on Thursday evening that son Thomas Raskin has passed away at the age of 25.
D.C. is reeling
“Tommy was pure magic. His brilliance and compassion knew no bounds. He passionately loved his family, friends, and animals, and was devoted to the cause of the global poor,” Raskin and his wife, Sarah Bloom Raskin, said in a statement.
“We are devastated and demolished to be without him.”
The cause of death of the younger Raskin has not been revealed. Thomas Raskin was in the process of completing his second year of law school at Harvard at the time of his death.
The Raskin family expressed gratitude for “the outpouring of support and love from neighbors, constituents, and friends,” and cautioned readers to “observe strict COVID-19 protocols during this time of grief.”
The Raskin family’s statement added that the younger Raskin is “survived by his beloved sisters Hannah and Tabitha, dozens of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and grandparents Arlene Bloom and Lynn Raskin.”
Difficult week
News of Raskin’s tragic death broke just days after the news of Letlow’s unexpected passing on Wednesday.
“Congressman-elect Luke Letlow, 41, passed away this evening at Ochsner-LSU Health Shreveport due to complications from COVID-19,” Letkow’s spokesman revealed this week.
“Letlow was admitted into a Monroe Hospital on December 19 after testing positive for the coronavirus and was transferred to Ochsner-LSU Health on Tuesday, December 22, and placed in intensive care,” the statement continued.
Letlow was set to be sworn into Congress on Sunday, but instead reportedly passed away due to complications related to a cardiac procedure prompted by his coronavirus diagnosis.
The late Congressman-elect is the first member of Congress to die of COVID-19 since the outset of the pandemic.
