Breitbart reports that Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) has announced his plan to object when Congress meets on January 6th to ratify the Electoral College vote that handed Democrat Joe Biden the 2020 presidential race.
Hawley is the first Senate Republican to do so. A number of Republicans in the House also plan to object, but their objections alone are insignificant.
They need the support of at least one senator to start a process that could lead to the Electoral College vote being thrown out and President Donald Trump being named to a second term.
This is what makes Hawley’s announcement so important.
Hawley is taking a stand
Hawley on Wednesday explained that he will object “to highlight the failure of some states, including notably Pennsylvania, to follow their own election laws as well as the unprecedented interference of Big Tech monopolies in the election.”
Hawley argued that, given what happened in the 2020 election, “at the very least, Congress should investigate allegations of voter fraud and adopt measures to secure the integrity of our elections.”
It is because Congress has not taken these steps that Hawley said he will object.
A sign of courage
This is a particularly brave move by Hawley for a number of reasons, including that it goes against the wishes of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who previously had implored GOP senators not to object. McConnell believes that objecting could prove costly to Republicans in future elections.
On the other side of the aisle, Hawley has already received a lot of criticism from Democrats for his announcement. They have accused him of undermining Democracy.
Hawley, however, clearly anticipated such criticism, which showed during an appearance on Fox News.
“I don’t recall hearing the Democrats make any such outrageous claims when they were the ones who were objecting during the Electoral College certification in 2004 and 2016,” Hawley said. “Democrats have done this for years in order to raise concerns about election integrity. Now, when Republicans, 74 million Americans have concerns about election integrity. We’re supposed to just sit down and shut up?”
January 6th is shaping up to be a pivotal day. The 2020 presidential election isn’t over yet.
