House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has already been caught violating the rules that she wants lawmakers to follow in the next Congress.
The Daily Caller reports that despite calling for terms like “mother” and “grandmother” to be barred from use in favor of “gender-neutral” terminology, the House speaker is still using those words to describe herself on Twitter.
Changing the rules
The criticism from the Daily Caller’s Mary Margaret Olohan comes after Pelosi and Rep. James McGovern (D-MA), the chairman of the House Rules Committee, proposed a series of rules changes for the 117th Congress. Among them is the creation of a “Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth.”
According to a press release from the Democrat leaders, this committee would be tasked with ensuring that Congress honors “all gender identities by changing pronouns and familial relationships in the House rules to be gender neutral.”
Breitbart reports that per “clause 8(c)(3) of rule XXIII, gendered terms, such as ‘father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, first cousin, nephew, niece, husband, wife, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, stepfather, stepmother, stepson, stepdaughter, stepbrother, stepsister, half brother, half-sister, grandson, or granddaughter’ will be removed” under the new rules.
Terms deemed acceptable by Pelosi and McGovern include “parent, child, sibling, parent’s sibling, first cousin, sibling’s child, spouse, parent-in-law, child-in-law, sibling-in-law, stepparent, stepchild, stepsibling, half-sibling, or grandchild.”
Hypocrisy abounds
But as Olohan notes, even Pelosi herself isn’t using those terms. As of Sunday, her Twitter bio still described her as:
Speaker of the House, focused on strengthening America’s middle class and creating jobs; mother, grandmother, dark chocolate connoisseur.
Olohan also pointed to individual tweets wherein Pelosi used similar phrasing.
Of course, this would be far from the first time that Pelosi has made clear that she has a “rules for thee, not for me” attitude. Last fall, the House speaker came under fire for getting her hair done at a San Francisco salon despite local ordinances prohibiting such due to rising cases of COVID-19.
“If a picture is worth a thousand words, the video of a mask-less Nancy Pelosi caught having her hair done at a shut-down San Francisco salon this past week is worth an entire dictionary,” Washington Times columnist Robert Knight wrote in September.
“Open, shameless hypocrisy…abounds on the left,” Knight added. “They spew hate while decrying as ‘haters’ anyone who disagrees with them. They loudly praise ‘free speech’ while erecting a cancel culture that silences dissent. They say they love America while trashing our country as uniquely evil.”
For Pelosi, it’s just second nature at this point.
