Ben Shapiro, other conservative stars condemn violence at the Capitol

Capitol Hill descended into chaos Wednesday when a large pro-Trump mob managed to force its way through police lines all the way to the floors of the House and Senate, leaving destruction in its wake. But while the rioters may be aligning themselves with right-wing causes, a number of prominent conservatives have come forward to denounce the violence.

According to Fox News, Ben Shapiro was among those to speak out against the besieging of the Capitol, calling it “un-American” in a tweet.

Attached to Shapiro’s message was a photo shared by the Washington Examiner‘s Becket Adams showing a rioter on the floor of the Senate.

“This is domestic terrorism”

Meanwhile, according to Fox, Meghan McCain, The View star and daughter of late Arizona Sen. John McCain (R), likened the violence to “domestic terrorism,” urging media outlets to call it as such.

Others who chimed in included writer Josh Hammer, who said the “seditious scoundrels” at the center of the chaos “do not in any way speak” on behalf of the right. “This is an incredibly sad day for the nation and everyone who loves it,” the Newsweek editor said, according to Fox.

The Washington Examiner‘s Tiana Lowe described the scene outside her window as heartbreaking and infuriating.

“It is unacceptable”

Just after 5 p.m. in Washington on Thursday, President Donald Trump’s press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, shared a similar sentiment in a brief statement from the White House.

“Let me be clear: the violence we saw yesterday at our nation’s Capitol was appalling, reprehensible, and antithetical to the American way. We condemn it — the president and this administration — in the strongest possible terms. It is unacceptable, and those that broke the law should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” she said, according to NPR.

“What we saw yesterday was a group of violent rioters undermining the legitimate First Amendment rights of the many thousands who came to peacefully have their voices heard in our nation’s capital,” McEnany added, as Bloomberg reported. “Those who violently besieged our capital are the opposite of everything this administration stands for.”
