Pelosi, Schumer signal support for Biden plan allowing trans students access to preferred facilities

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden recently indicated that he would allow transgender children to access school facilities associated with their preferred gender if he is successful in becoming the next president.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has since confirmed that she would endorse the plan, which would open up access to sports teams, locker rooms, and bathrooms at federally funded schools in accordance with Title IX.

“It’d make my life a lot easier”

She supported Biden’s proposal in response to a reporter’s question during a press conference on Friday. Asked both if she agrees with his position as well as whether she believes the president has “the power to unilaterally” impose such a move, Pelosi was clear.

“Yes, and I think he does,” she replied.

Prior to last month’s election, the former vice president said that he believed there should be “zero discrimination” if a child identifies as a different gender and vowed to sign the Equality Act to establish related protections.

“The idea that an 8-year-old child or a 10-year-old child decides, you know — ‘I decided I want to be transgender, that’s what I think I’d like to be, it’d make my life a lot easier’ — there should be zero discrimination,” Biden said.

Among the other specific transgender-related issue he addressed on the campaign trail is violence against members of the community, declaring that “too many transgender women of color are being murdered.”

“He’ll check things out, legally”

As for the Equality Act, the Daily Caller determined that it “would force public schools to allow biological males who identify as transgender girls into female athletics” as well as allow transgender students to access the facilities of their choice.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was asked the same questions as Pelosi.

“I agree with the decision, and I know he’ll check things out thoroughly, legally,” he replied, signaling Democratic Party support in both chambers of Congress.

According to the Associated Press, Biden has advocated pursuing “virtually every major proposal” being pursued by LGBTQ advocates.

Among those wish-list items is a repeal of the Trump-era ban on transgender military service and protection against discrimination against LGBTQ individuals in pursuing federal contracts.
