Kristi Noem channels Ronald Reagan after Biden vows ‘help is on the way’

Joe Biden tried to extend an olive branch Tuesday to Americans who are “struggling right now,” but what he really did was step on a landmine — and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) was quick to capitalize on it.

According to the Daily Wire, Noem pushed back against the former vice president’s promise to “help” in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic with a tweet that quoted former President Ronald Reagan.

“I’m here to help”

“My message to everyone struggling right now is this: Help is on the way,” Biden wrote in a Tuesday tweet.

For Noem, it was a message that was reminiscent of a statement uttered by Reagan in the mid-1980s: “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.”

Biden’s plans

Biden, for his part, has made it clear over the last several months that he plans to handle things much differently than President Donald Trump. On the issue of the coronavirus in particular, Biden and those close to him have suggested nationwide mask mandates and lockdown orders may be on the table in an effort to curb the spread of the disease — measures that have liberty-minded individuals like Noem worried, as the Daily Wire noted.

Beyond that, Biden has long maintained that he is better equipped to handle the pandemic; according to the New York Post, the former vice president told NBC News host Lester Holt last week that his administration is already in talks on “how to not only distribute [a COVID-19 vaccine], but get from a vaccine being distributed to a person being able to get vaccinated.”

But in reality, most of the heavy lifting has already been done for him. President Trump is handing Biden a viable vaccine that can get us to herd immunity within months, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci.

In fact, we are up to three viable vaccines now that are awaiting approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Associated Press reports.

The bottom line

While the majority of the American public apparently didn’t like Trump’s no-nonsense approach to the pandemic, it looks like they’re going to see in the end that it was the best course of action.

Trump got ventilators when hospitals thought they needed them, he pushed for therapeutics that have reduced the death rate tenfold from what it was early on, and he got as much of the economy back up and running as possible, given the circumstances.

Biden would be wise to tread lightly with a public already tired of restrictions and ready to move on from this virus as soon as possible.
