Even as President Donald Trump continues to contest the validity of this month’s presidential race, many of his detractors are already making plans for Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s prospective administration.
One of them is Andrew Weissmann, an MSNBC contributor who formerly served as special counsel Robert Mueller’s assistant. In an opinion piece this week, he declared that one of Biden’s priorities upon entering the White House should be putting Trump behind bars.
“Ample evidence”
As Weissmann wrote in The New York Times, the Department of Justice should be prepared to “prosecute” the president for “potential federal crimes” he might have committed.
“Mr. Trump’s criminal exposure is clear,” the attorney argued, alleging that there is “ample evidence” to charge him with obstruction of justice.
“In short, being president should mean you are more accountable, not less, to the rule of law,” Weissmann insisted, warning that Trump could “pardon not just his family and friends before leaving office but also himself in order to void federal criminal liability.”
The Associated Press on Wednesday cited unnamed sources who were sounding similar alarms, claiming that the president plans to issue a pardon for former national security adviser Michael Flynn prior to leaving office.
As Breitbart pointed out, however, Weissmann’s criticism of the president is not limited to his recent diatribe. In a tweet earlier this month, he compared Trump to Adolf Hitler.
“There should be accountability”
“For those people who say we should appease Trump, how did that approach go for Neville Chamberlain?” he asked, referencing the British prime minister widely condemned for his approach to Hitler’s early acts of aggression.
Weissmann is also not alone in his belief that Trump deserves to face criminal prosecution for his actions as a candidate and commander in chief.
Prior to becoming Biden’s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) declared that prosecutors would “have no choice” but to pursue charges against the president.
“There has to be accountability,” she said during an NPR interview last year. “I mean look, people might, you know, question why I became a prosecutor. Well, I’ll tell you one of the reasons — I believe there should be accountability.”
She went on to echo the assertion of other Trump critics, declaring that “the president is not above the law.”
