Judge Amy Coney Barrett will soon be confirmed as a Supreme Court justice, despite weeks of protest from Democrats and their leftist base.
The Senate will take a final vote Monday after voting mostly along party lines Sunday, 51–48, to end a last marathon of debate from Democrats, Fox News reported.
Republicans move forward on ACB
Barrett would be Trump’s third Supreme Court justice appointed to the court, after Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Democrats, for their part, fear the consequences of a 6–3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court, which they have spent weeks arguing will allow Republicans to wage an attack on Obamacare and abortion rights.
The Senate will take up a final vote around 8 p.m. Monday after deciding Sunday to move ahead, with all Republicans except Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) voting to move forward.
After weeks of partisan rancor, the fight will end with an outcome long seen as inevitable after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) rallied support in September for a pre-Election Day vote, with only Collins and Murkowski in opposition. Murkowski, however, recently announced she will vote to confirm Barrett, Fox News reported.
Democrats made one last, desperate push overnight Sunday, with a series of speeches that rehashed familiar talking points attacking the process as a rushed, hypocritical “sham.” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) shared a wistful tweet that seemed to sum up the sense of defeat in his party.
“Just finished the 3-5am shift on the Senate floor in protest of the vote later today on radical Amy Coney Barrett,” he wrote. “She will rule to invalidate ObamaCare, causing 23M to lose insurance in the middle of a pandemic. Catastrophic. Both sad and furious on my rainy drive home.”
Democrats ramp up threats
With Barrett on her way to the court, Democrats are ramping up threats to take retaliatory actions like court-packing, Fox News reports.
“The fact is that our Republican colleagues are shattering the norms and breaking the rules and breaking their word, and there will be consequences,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). “There inevitably are consequences when one person breaks his or her word to another.
McConnell is making no apologies, however.
“A lot of what we’ve done over the last four years will be undone sooner or later by the next election … They won’t be able to do much about this for a long time to come,” he said Sunday, as Fox reported.
According to the New York Post, Barrett is expected to be sworn in by Clarence Thomas at the White House Monday night.
