Kamala Harris takes flak from Black voter: She ‘put a lot of Black brothers away’

Democrats will soon have to learn that they can’t take any demographic of voters for granted.

According to Breitbart, vice presidential hopeful Kamala Harris, a California senator who once served as the state’s attorney general, stumped for the Biden–Harris ticket in Georgia on Friday — but she faced some stunning rebukes from voters who are concerned about her record as a prosecutor.

One such voter was renowned music mogul Jermaine Dupri. According to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that was cited by Breitbart, Dupri, who is Black, didn’t shy away from slamming Harris at the Friday event, telling her that she “put a lot of Black brothers away in your past.”

“Yes, I was a prosecutor”

Dupri’s comments came during a roundtable discussion at Georgia’s Morehouse College.

“Yes, I was a prosecutor,” Harris said in response, according to Breitbart. “I decided to go in a system that I knew was flawed to reform it. Yes, I decided to go up the rough side of the mountain, as we say in church. And I didn’t fix the entire system.”

Harris’ record became a significant issue during the Democratic presidential primary race, particularly after it was raised at a debate by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI).

“I’m concerned about this record of Senator Harris,” Gabbard said at the time, according to Business Insider. “She put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.

“She blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row,” the Hawaii congresswoman added. “She kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of California, and she fought to keep cash bail system in place that impacts poor people in the worst kind of way.”

She can’t help but mention Trump

Instead of addressing the failures in her own record, the California senator made a point of misrepresenting Trump’s position on race during her appearance in Georgia.

“Donald Trump…in the last debate stood on the debate stage and refused to condemn white supremacists,” Harris said, according to Breitbart.

But as the outlet pointed out, the president has a long history of both explicitly denouncing white supremacists and prosecuting them for crimes.

Will we see an apology from Harris on this or any other point she made Friday, though? I wouldn’t count on it.
