Weekend shootings in Chicago leave 7 dead, nearly 3 dozen injured: Report

Shots were fired in Chicago over Labor Day weekend.

At least seven were killed and 34 others wounded from shootings in the Windy City from Friday evening to Monday afternoon, according to a report from NBC 5 Chicago.

Bloodshed in Chicago

The report, which was cited by Breitbart and later updated, revealed that the bloodshed began with the shooting of a 36-year-old man at a party Friday night. According to NBC 5, police say their primary suspect in that incident is a family member.

Officers reportedly recovered a weapon at the crime scene, and the victim was treated at the University of Chicago Medical Center for a critical gunshot wound to his abdomen.

A teenage girl and 4-year-old boy were also shot Friday by an unknown assailant in a black Dodge Challenger, according to NBC 5. No arrests have been made in that shooting.

Both the boy, who was shot in the leg, and the 18-year-old, who “was shot in the lower backside,” according to NBC 5, remain in the hospital but are expected to recover.

In a separate incident reported by NBC 5, a suspect was fatally shot by police at approximately 1:41 a.m. Saturday after he stabbed an officer with a butcher knife. Attempts to stop him with a taser were reportedly unsuccessful.

Another fatality occurred later in the evening, when police discovered a man lying on the ground with two gunshot wounds to his head, ABC 7 Chicago reported. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition and subsequently pronounced dead.

Trump admin doubles down

In response to violence seen in cities in Chicago, Attorney General Bill Barr announced earlier this summer the creation of what has been dubbed Operation Legend.

Named for 4-year-old homicide victim LeGend Taliferro, the operation involves a partnership between federal and local law enforcement “to fight the sudden surge of violent crime,” according to a Justice Department press release.

“President Trump has made clear: the federal government stands ready and willing to assist any of our state and local law enforcement partners across the nation responding to violent crime,” Barr said in a statement included in the release.

The AG also paid tribute to 4-year-old LeGend, who he said “was shot in the face while sleeping in his bed” in Kansas City. “LeGend’s death is a horrifying reminder that violent crime left unchecked is a threat to us all and cannot be allowed to continue,” Barr added.
