The magazine that published an article claiming that President Donald Trump disparaged fallen American troops is owned by a billionaire who supports Joe Biden, the Daily Caller revealed Friday.
Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple wizard Steve Jobs and the majority owner of The Atlantic, has donated over $1 million to Democrats including Biden since 2019, according to the Daily Caller.
Follow the money
Last week, The Atlantic magazine published a piece by editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg claiming that Trump called Americans killed in combat “suckers” and “losers.”
The article has taken heavy backlash for using all anonymous sources, and President Trump and several of his current and former staffers — including rival John Bolton — have contradicted Goldberg’s story, as The Washington Times notes. The Atlantic piece surfaced right as the presidential race has appeared to tighten up, with just two months to go before Election Day, prompting speculation by Trump allies of a coordinated political hit.
Notably, a progressive PAC, VoteVets, released an ad attacking Trump over The Atlantic piece within a day — but the group told the Daily Caller they were “up all night” working on the advertisement.
Meanwhile, Powell Jobs, who took on a 70% stake in the Atlantic in 2017, is in regular contact with Goldberg and is a major Biden donor, the Daily Caller notes.
According to the Daily Caller, Powell Jobs has contributed over $1 million to exclusively Democratic candidates since 2019 — including $2,800 to Biden’s primary campaign, and another $610,600 to the Biden Victory Fund in June.
A “failing” magazine
The president’s allies have wasted no time attacking the magazine’s Democratic connections, as Trump — who has made no secret of his dislike for anti-Trump publications owned by wealthy tech moguls, such as the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post — now adds The Atlantic to his list.
In a Sunday tweet, Trump knocked Powell Jobs for “wasting money” on a magazine run by a “con man” who “spews FAKE NEWS [and] HATE,” according to the New York Post.
“Steve Jobs would not be happy that his wife is wasting money he left her on a failing Radical Left Magazine that is run by a con man (Goldberg) and spews FAKE NEWS & HATE,” Trump tweeted.
“Call her, write her, let her know how you feel!!!” the president added.
Goldberg, for his part, has teased that there is more to come, telling CNN on Sunday that there will be “more confirmation and new pieces of information” down the line, according to Axios.
