President Donald Trump has instructed the Office of Management and Budget to halt funding of training programs based on what his administration is calling “un-American propaganda.”
The controversial courses are rooted in critical race theory, which relies on the assumption that America is built on systemic racism. A White House statement on Friday instructed all federal agencies to stop engaging in such programs.
“Counter to the fundamental beliefs”
While supporters of the theory say it helps employees identify and alter their role in perpetuating such institutional racism, OMB Director Russell Vought expressed a much different take on behalf of the Trump administration.
“These types of ‘trainings’ not only run counter to the fundamental beliefs for which our Nation has stood since its inception, but they also engender division and resentment within the Federal workforce,” he wrote.
Vought’s statement indicated that the president directed him “to ensure that Federal agencies cease and desist from using taxpayer dollars to fund these divisive, un-American propaganda training sessions.”
In response, he is now instructing relevant agencies to begin identifying “all contracts or other agency spending related to any training on ‘critical race theory,’ ‘white privilege,’ or any other training or propaganda effort that teaches or suggests either (1) that the United States is an inherently racist or evil country or (2) that any race or ethnicity is inherently racist or evil.”
The director has also asked federal departments to identify legal ways through which funding can be redirected away from critical race theory programs.
More details to come
He noted that more detailed directives will be announced at a later date.
Trump’s instruction came days after a federal agency held a three-day mandatory training session in which white male employees were instructed to acknowledge their privilege, as reported by the Daily Caller.
The U.S. Agency for International Development similarly distributed manuals to its employees on matters including “microaggression” and”misgendering,” the outlet previously reported.
As with almost all of his efforts to clean up the federal government, Trump is sure to face plenty of criticism for his latest move.
In the eyes of millions of Americans who do not want their taxes used to support this agenda, however, the president made the right call.
