Even as Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden faces continued scrutiny over his mental acuity, he continues to get caught in potentially embarrassing situations that add more fuel to the speculation.
As a recent example, he was addressing supporters on Monday when he called on an aide to “move it up here,” apparently referring to notes he was using to answer a question.
“Long pauses between his words”
The moment came during a virtual campaign event during which critics noted that he appeared to pause frequently while expressing his thoughts. A Trump campaign tweet was soon crafted to call attention to the remark.
“Joe Biden is relying on a teleprompter to answer questions,” the post asserted. “There are long pauses between his words as he waits for the prompter to scroll.”
In an editorial this week, the New York Post editorial board pointed out the nominee’s penchant for using notes — including sometimes apparently reading aloud the directions that are supposed to be kept quiet during his remarks.
“It’s even more notable when you realize how rarely Biden makes himself available, especially to probing reporters,” the editorial continued.
The board used multiple examples to bolster their point, noting that MSNBC host Al Sharpton “appears to have given him questions ahead” of an interview for which Biden had answers readily available.
“Trump campaign talking points”
Trump, who has frequently derided his opponent as “sleepy” and “slow,” also took note of the apparent teleprompter use. He declared during an event on Thursday that it would be the “story of the year” if he behaved like Biden on the campaign trail.
“He’s reading it off a teleprompter,” the president said. “I’m not allowed to use a teleprompter.”
Biden press secretary T.J. Ducklo, however, dismissed the supposed scandal as “straight from the Trump campaign talking points” when he was asked about the issue during a recent Fox News Channel interview.
“They talk about it every day because they don’t have a coherent argument for why Donald Trump deserves re-election,” he told host Bret Baier.
As the Post editorial board put it, “Biden seems unable to get through any interview without scripts.” Voters who cringe through each one of the former vice president’s public statements are likely to agree.
