Trump announces ‘1776 commission’ to ‘promote patriotic education’

To honor and defend America’s founding, President Donald Trump announced an initiative on Constitution Day promoting “patriotic education.”

In a rousing speech at the National Archives, the president denounced the “toxic” version of American history being pushed by the left and declared that he would create a “1776 commission” to counter it.

Speaking in the chamber where the nation’s founding documents are kept, the president said that left-wing riots that have raged across the country are the result of “toxic propaganda” that is running rampant in classrooms and workplaces.

In response, the president said he will establish a “1776 commission” to cultivate national unity and pride, with a program of “patriotic education” to combat this “left-wing indoctrination.”

“We must clear away the twisted web of lies in our schools and classrooms and teach our children the magnificent truth about our country,” Trump said.

The president’s announcement seemed to be almost a direct response to the New York Times‘ 1619 Project, which seeks to redefine America as having been founded on slavery. The president identified the 1619 Project and critical race theory, which teaches that America is an oppressive and racist society, as part of a broader effort to “overthrow the American Revolution” by a radical movement that uses “cancel culture” to repress dissent.

“Whether it is the mob on the street, or cancel culture in the boardroom, the goal is the same: to silence dissent, to scare you out of speaking the truth and to bully Americans into abandoning their values, their heritage and their very way of life,” he said. Watch Trump’s speech below:

Trump also took aim at Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, who he said did nothing when a statue of a Founding Father, Caesar Rodney, was removed in Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Delaware this summer amidst “cultural revolution.” The president said he would honor Rodney with a new statue in the National Garden of American Heroes, which he announced in a speech at Mount Rushmore this summer.

The president’s latest speech came after he called on Russ Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, to crack down on the use of critical race theory training in federal agencies.

Trump declares Constitution Week

Trump also signed Thursday a proclamation honoring Constitution Day, Citizenship Day, and Constitution Week, while affirming America’s commitment to a constitutional government against those “falsely decrying our country and its institutions as evil and unjust.”

“On this Constitution and Citizenship Day, and during this Constitution Week, we recommit to upholding our constitutional system, to honoring its Framers and those who have sacrificed to defend it — who knew the true price of liberty — and to embracing the duty we as citizens have to preserve the society it has built.”

The president’s decisions have sparked a furious backlash from the left, with many progressives comparing “patriotic education” to fascist indoctrination from Nazi Germany.
