Poll: Biden falls behind Trump in Texas

During the summer, many commentators pointed to polls showing that President Donald Trump was badly trailing Democratic rival Joe Biden.

However, the situation appears to be a reversing, with a new poll from Texas reporting that the president has retaken his lead.

Released by The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler, the survey shows Trump with a 2 point lead over Biden, with 48 percent of likely Texas voters backing the president compared to 46 percent who support his challenger.

Trump leads Biden among likely voters

When likely voters are broken down by race, Trump’s strongest base of support is with white voters, 60 percent of whom say they favor him. Meanwhile, twenty-eight percent of Hispanic likely voters also say they support Trump.

The results change once all registered voters are taken into account: among that group, Biden still leads Trump by one point — 44 to 43 percent. Yet even this represents a decline, as the former vice president had a 5 point lead in July.

Among both groups, the results are within the margin of error, which stands at 3.22 points for likely voters and 2.87 points for registered voters overall.

The survey was carried out between August 28 to September 2 and included 1,176 registered voters. Of that total, 901 were classified as likely voters.

Sen. John Cornyn beating MJ Hegar by a wide margin

In addition to the presidential race, the poll also looked at Republican Sen. John Cornyn’s re-election campaign. It states that he holds an 11 point advantage over Democrat MJ Hegar.

Political scientist Mark Owens conducted the poll, and The Dallas Morning News quoted him as saying, “Trump is helped by Cornyn.”

The paper also quoted poll respondent and Biden supporter Terri Sharman, who said she “will be shocked” if the former vice president carries her state.

Sharman isn’t the only one to voice such skepticism, with senior Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller expressing doubt about Biden’s chances.

“I don’t think Biden’s ultimately going to spend 6 million bucks in Texas,” Miller predicted confidently. “I think it would be great if he did. I’d welcome him to it. Texas TV stations would love to have it.”
