It has been 19 years since America was attacked and nearly 3,000 of our citizens were killed in New York City, at the Pentagon and in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania; temporarily uniting the American people over the loss and our fight against the attackers.
On the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the current Vice President Mike Pence and former Vice President and current Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden showed the same kind of unity when they met unexpectedly at a 9/11 memorial ceremony at the World Trade Center memorial in Manhattan.
While Biden and Pence are on opposing presidential tickets and would normally verbally spar over a whole host of political issues and positions, the two bumped elbows and briefly spoke cordially before the service of remembrance began Friday morning.
Unity on display at 9/11 site
Others present at the ceremony included the two mens’ wives, former Democrat presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg, and New York Sens. Chuck Schumer (D) and Kirstin Gillibrand (D) as well as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D).

It was in stark contrast to the constant negative statements by both the Trump and Biden campaigns attempting to blame the other politician and/or their party for the problems in the country.
Biden won’t cross paths with Trump
While Pence went on to speak at a Tunnel to Towers Foundation event, Biden planned to visit the Shanksville crash site where passengers brought down a fourth plane rather than let it proceed to its final destination, still unknown
Trump also planned to visit the Shanksville site, but would do so in the morning. The two presidential candidates will not cross paths on this day of memory.
While we are currently in the middle of what could end up being the most contentious election America ever faces, it’s good to know that in some way, the most bitter opponents can unite to remember what happened on 9/11.
It gives me hope that a greater measure of unity may one day be possible in the country and that one of the lessons of 9/11 won’t be lost forever in the political divisions in which we seem to be mired right now.
