Michael Moore urges Pelosi to shut down the government to stop Trump nominee

The death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has resulted in a vacancy on the Supreme Court, and it’s one that President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have pledged to fill.

Leftists are outraged over that promise, and many are suggesting ways to obstruct Ginsburg’s replacement. Among them is filmmaker Michael Moore, who is urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to shut down the government to stop Trump from getting another SCOTUS justice confirmed.

“You have to do something that the Republicans have been doing for decades,” Breitbart quoted Moore as saying on Sunday’s episode of his podcast.

Moore: “Shut the whole damn thing down”

“For the first time… you have to block the continuing resolution that funds the government and just let it shut down,” he continued, referring to legislation that must be passed by September 30 in order to keep government money flowing.

“Shut the whole damn thing down,” the movie director insisted. “Shut the government down, so they do not have the funds to try to ram through this person they want to get on the Supreme Court before Trump’s gone.”

“Just take the money out of the system that runs the halls of Congress,” Moore went on. “Or, make it contingent on Mitch McConnell signing a pledge, in writing, that he will put no Supreme Court nominee in front of the Senate before inauguration day.”

“I know, some people won’t like this,” he conceded, “but we’re all going to have to sacrifice here, a little bit, for a week or two — or whatever it is — to make sure that the Republicans… cannot do the job that they’re going to try to do, to not pull off another one of their crimes.”

Pelosi demurs

For now, Moore is likely to be disappointed by Pelosi. The House Speaker said Sunday that “none of us has any interest in shutting down government” in response to questions about Trump’s nominee, but did hint at other options, saying, “We have arrows in our quiver that I’m not about to discuss right now.”

Breitbart also reported that Moore didn’t stop at simply demanding fiscal shenanigans on Capitol Hill: during an interview with MSNBC’s “Weekends,” he told Democrats to “go out in the streets.”

“This is not going to happen,” he said of the possibility that President Trump will succeed in getting a Supreme Court nominee confirmed.

Moore: “We need protests”

However, Moore added that “it’s not going to not happen on its own, though. What I’m encouraging people to do this weekend is, umm, we need to be out in the streets. We need to be in front of the local offices in your states, where the U.S. senators have their local offices. We need protests out there every single day.”

Moore is far from alone in talking of extraordinary action. Politico quoted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as threatening that “nothing is off the table” if any nomination goes ahead.
